BUILDING BLOCKS
A good life depends upon a strong foundation to be successful, from which one may leap to grasp opportunity and adventure.
However, it is a sad reality that many among us do not have that strong foundation upon which to build our lives, whether by bad luck, adversity or never possessing one to start with.
‘BUILDING BLOCKS’ was designed to be that first foundation stone that helps people build – or rebuild – their lives.

Design Project Based Upon the 2016 ‘Tiny Homes’ Competition
The chosen topic for this project was the Chicago ‘Tiny Homes Competition’ and while submission were closed at the time of this assessment project, it was still considered a good ‘dry run’ of sorts. The project brief stated that there were to be 10 to 12 dwellings located on the allocated plot of land (actual site visible in map below).
This concept of a foundation stone is represented within the complex through the use of boxed shapes and of concrete and stone pavers. Ten housing modules are grouped in twos, creating 5 boxed housing structures, plus the communal building, arranged in a grid surrounding and protecting a central communal space. Communities create opportunities and it is hoped that this arrangement will assist the residence in enhancing their lives.

Early Precedent Study: The Island House by 2by4 Architects
Built: 2012 – The Hague
Each housing module has been designed for two or three people as the upstairs bedroom can be outfitted for two individuals are a couple, whatever may be required. The terrace of each module has a raised garden which can be used by residence to learn how to maintain heathy plants or grow their own food from which can ultimately arise a sense of achievement.
The strong exterior lines of each housing module combined with the use of concrete and stone conveys a sense of permanency and resilience both for the longevity of the complex and the security of its residents.
